Since 2004 your energy supply is no longer bound to the energy company in your region. You are free to purchase your electricity or gas from any company in The Netherlands. This has created competition in the energy market and that is an advantage for you as a buyer of energy.

License to supply energy
In order to supply gas and/or electricity the supplier has to have a license issued by the Office of Energy. In order to be granted a license, the company must prove that it can be a reliable energy provider. The government imposes different requirements on the supply of gas and electricity. Hence, there are two separate permits. To be allowed to supply gas and electricity, a power company must therefore have two licenses.
